Entrepreneur, Philanthropist, and Civic Leader

Making a Difference

Kent Thiry led a company from the brink of bankruptcy to the Fortune 500. He’s created nonprofits and civic organizations focused on positive change that directly impact individuals and communities. As an architect of good-government initiatives, he has helped shape public policy so more Americans are included within the democratic process.

All of those endeavors have one thing in common: They are intended to have a long-term systemic impact that helps strengthen our overall sense of community, all people and all places.

Kent served as CEO of DaVita from 1999 to 2019, and has divided his energy between five primary pursuits: Renewing our Democracy; Protecting the Planet; Jumpstarting Economic Mobility; Developing Leadership and Culture; and Improving Healthcare

Renewing our Democracy

Giving voters greater voice and choice through public policy initiatives and electoral reforms

Co-chair of Unite America, a Denver-based philanthropic venture fund that invests in nonpartisan election reforms across the country to foster a more representative and functional government

Taking power from political insiders and giving it back to the people through gerrymandering reforms, including efforts to establish independent redistricting commissions in California and Colorado

Eliminating barriers to participating in elections for independent voters, who make up a larger share of the electorate in Colorado and the United States than ever.

Protecting the Planet

Working to conserve natural resources, combat climate change and promote outdoor recreation

Member of the Global Board of the Nature Conservancy and significant donor to programs to enhance and preserve a planet threatened by climate change and biodiversity loss.

Supporter of the Highline Canal Conservancy, a nonprofit working with the public and governmental entities throughout the region to guide preservation and enhancement of the 71-mile-long canal

Investor in the Trust for Public Land’s Colorado Conservation Finance Program, which has secured nearly $2 billion to protect the outdoors through local voter initiatives since 2020.

Jumpstarting Economic Mobility

Developing initiatives and supporting work to improve economic opportunities for people from disadvantaged communities

Founder of Advance EDU, which aims to help close Colorado’s college and career attainment equity gaps by supporting college students in innovative, affordable paths to in-demand careers.

Co-founder Colorado Thrives, a non-profit led by executives from some of Colorado’s largest companies to advance economic mobility for all Coloradans and help Colorado thrive for the long-term.

Former Chair Energize Colorado Gap Fund, which provided $50+ million in COVID-relief grants to small businesses — emphasizing rural areas and/or those owned by women, minorities, and veterans.

Developing Leadership and Culture

Delivering exceptional results based on the idea of ‘community first, company second’

As CEO of DaVita Inc., catapulted the company from the brink of bankruptcy to the Fortune 500 list while simultaneously leading the kidney care industry in patient clinical outcomes.

Created a community focused as much on organizational outcomes as on helping teammates with personal and professional growth, leading to “case studies” taught at Harvard and Stanford universities.

Pledged to make DaVita one of the first Fortune 500 companies to have a majority-diverse board in XXXX, and accomplished the goal X years early, in XXXX.

Improving Healthcare

Working to expand access to care improve delivery across diverse practice areas

Joined board of Denver-based Sondermind shortly after the founding of this innovative and high-growth company focused on increasing access to and effectiveness of mental health care.

Serve as an executive advisor to multiple healthcare startups working to develop and deliver critical advancements in the areas of physical therapy, autism and fertility.
